Shovel Knight is a new retro inspired 2D side-scroller that is designed to take you back to the good old days of gaming. The game contains all the familiar elements of  the antique game titles that inspired it, but contains none of the shortcomings or limitations of those 8 and 16 bit games of days gone by. This is a game that sticks to the pure and simple elements of what makes gaming so great and never gets too bloated.

The game's name "Shovel Knight" is wisely chosen as the main protagonist's weapon of choice is a shovel! Which he uses to not only beat up enemies with but also to aid him in completing puzzles and objectives with digging up things underground and even using it to get to higher locations. The main story gives you an over-world map that will have you completing missions which usually end with you battling some type of boss or mini-boss at the end of each level, upon completing a new level on the map will open. But aside from the main quests the game encourages players to search and find treasures that are well hidden all over the levels, sometimes in chest, enemies, or even underground! Some of this treasure can be used to purchase special items and gear at the world towns which you can visit and spend a lot of time at, but also on many levels there are secret vendors that you can acquire special gear from.

Shovel Knight has some of the best retro pixel art you will ever see with colorful and lush levels and thoughtful enemies, with adorable animations to boot. But what I really loved is the music in this game which ranged from whimsical all the way to full blown epic. For any of the completionists out there I should note you can seek and find music sheets all over the levels to unlock more music tracks.

I would say Shovel Knight's difficulty is pretty well balanced never to easy never to tough, you have unlimited lives as you play but when you die you lose money although you have a chance to redeem some lost money if you get back to your death location. One interesting feature they added for gambling players is the ability to destroy checkpoints upon reaching them which enables players to earn more treasure but at the risk of being pulled back further in the level if they should die. Like many games once finishing the game you will unlock a higher difficulty that the most hardcore players can pick. This difficulty makes enemies hardier and deal much more damage but it also lets players keep the gear and items they got from their earlier playthrough which is pretty cool.
